Background noise is defined as an ambient sound that isn't the specific sound that you're paying attention to. On the part of the sender, focusing on speaking louder to overcome the background noise can take their attention away from the content of the communication, making it more difficult for recipients to understand them. It can also prevent them from picking up on feedback from the recipients, and from judging the effectiveness of their communication.

How Background Noise Impacts Communication

With reference to an electrical system, noise may be defined as any unwanted form of energy which tends to interfere with proper reception and reproduction of wanted signal. Noise is random, undesirable electrical energy that enters the communications system via the communicating medium and interferes with the transmitted message. However, some noise is also produced in the receiver. External noise cannot be reduced except by changing the location of the receiver or the entire system. Internal noise on the other hand can be easily evaluated Mathematically and can be reduced to a great extent by proper design. As already said, because of the fact that internal noise can be reduced to a great extent, study of noise characteristics is a very important part of the communication engineering. Atmospheric noise or static is caused by lighting discharges in thunderstorms and other natural electrical disturbances occurring in the atmosphere.

The communication cycle offers a model for communication. In its simplest form, the cycle consists of a sender, a message, and a recipient. Other models include the channel, which is the vehicle in which your message travels. For the purposes of speech communication, the speaker is you! The speaker is perhaps the second most important factor in the speech communication model, second only to the message your speech itself.

In electronics, noise is an unwanted disturbance in an electrical signal. In communication systems , noise is an error or undesired random disturbance of a useful information signal. The noise is a summation of unwanted or disturbing energy from natural and sometimes man-made sources. Noise is, however, typically distinguished from interference , [a] for example in the signal-to-noise ratio SNR , signal-to-interference ratio SIR and signal-to-noise plus interference ratio SNIR measures.

In any communication system, during the transmission of the signal, or while receiving the signal, some unwanted signal gets introduced into the communication, making it unpleasant for the receiver, questioning the quality of the communication. Such a disturbance is called as Noise. Noise is an unwanted signal which interferes with the original message signal and corrupts the parameters of the message signal. This alteration in the communication process, leads to the message getting altered. It is most likely to be entered at the channel or the receiver. Hence, it is understood that noise is some signal which has no pattern and no constant frequency or amplitude. It is quite random and unpredictable.

2) Internal Noise. External Noise: External noise is defined as the type of Noise which is general externally due to communication system.
