Collective intentionality is of central importance in social ontology. In this section, we will discuss the notions of imposition of function, of collective intentionality, and of constitutional rule. The second section will critically re-examine the notion of collective intentionality.

Game Theory and the Social Contract

Social contract , in political philosophy , an actual or hypothetical compact, or agreement, between the ruled and their rulers, defining the rights and duties of each. In primeval times, according to the theory, individuals were born into an anarchic state of nature , which was happy or unhappy according to the particular version. They then, by exercising natural reason , formed a society and a government by means of a contract among themselves. Although similar ideas can be traced to the Greek Sophists , social-contract theories had their greatest currency in the 17th and 18th centuries and are associated with such philosophers as the Englishmen Thomas Hobbes and John Locke and the Frenchman Jean-Jacques Rousseau. What distinguished these theories of political obligation from other doctrines of the period was their attempt to justify and delimit political authority on the grounds of individual self-interest and rational consent. By comparing the advantages of organized government with the disadvantages of the state of nature, they showed why and under what conditions government is useful and ought therefore to be accepted by all reasonable people as a voluntary obligation. These conclusions were then reduced to the form of a social contract, from which it was supposed that all the essential rights and duties of citizens could be logically deduced.

Game theory is the systematic study of interdependent rational choice. It should be distinguished from decision theory, the systematic study of individual practical and epistemic choice in parametric contexts i. Decision theory has several applications to ethics see Dreier ; Mele and Rawlings Game theory may be used to explain, to predict, and to evaluate human behavior in contexts where the outcome of action depends on what several agents choose to do and where their choices depend on what others choose to do. See the entry on game theory Game theory consequently is relevant to ethics, and it is used in moral and political philosophy in a variety of ways.

Game Theory and Ethics

From Economic Learning and Social Evolution. In Volume 1 of Game Theory and the Social Contract , Ken Binmore restated the problems of moral and political philosophy in the language of game theory. In Volume 2, Just Playing , he unveils his own controversial theory, which abandons the metaphysics of Immanuel Kant for the naturalistic approach to morality of David Hume. According to this viewpoint, a fairness norm is a convention that evolved to coordinate behavior on an equilibrium of a society's Game of Life. This approach allows Binmore to mount an evolutionary defense of Rawls's original position that escapes the utilitarian conclusions that follow when orthodox reasoning is applied with the traditional assumptions. Using ideas borrowed from the theory of bargaining and repeated games, Binmore is led instead to a form of egalitarianism that vindicates the intuitions that led Rawls to write his Theory of Justice.

Game theory

In moral and political philosophy , the social contract is a theory or model that originated during the Age of Enlightenment and usually concerns the legitimacy of the authority of the state over the individual. The term takes its name from The Social Contract French: Du contrat social ou Principes du droit politique , a book by Jean-Jacques Rousseau that discussed this concept. Although the antecedents of social contract theory are found in antiquity, in Greek and Stoic philosophy and Roman and Canon Law , the heyday of the social contract was the midth to early 19th centuries, when it emerged as the leading doctrine of political legitimacy. The starting point for most social contract theories is an examination of the human condition absent of any political order termed the " state of nature " by Thomas Hobbes.

The treatment forces close attention to be given to questions of the inter-personal comparison of utilities. This treatment may be of some independent interest, since it leads to some unifying considerations for cooperative bargaining solutions. No background in game theory or knowledge of mathematics beyond elementary algebra is required to read the paper. On the other hand, the arguments do often hinge on points which need to be thought about with some precision. Unable to display preview.
