As Protestants of any denomination or even as Catholics! Lesson focus: Martin Luther challenged a lot of things that people were doing wrong; sometimes it is okay to go against people in charge if it means following God. Start going through a list of potential offenses, and with each one have students hand over a piece if they have done it…has anyone ever told a lie or fib? Been disrespectful? Misspelled a word?

The Reformation alternatively named the Protestant Reformation or the European Reformation [1] was a major movement within Western Christianity in 16th-century Europe that posed a religious and political challenge to the Catholic Church and in particular to papal authority , arising from what were perceived to be errors, abuses, and discrepancies by the Catholic Church. Although the Reformation is usually considered to have started with the publication of the Ninety-five Theses by Martin Luther in , there was no schism between the Catholic Church and the nascent Luther until the Edict of Worms. The edict condemned Luther and officially banned citizens of the Holy Roman Empire from defending or propagating his ideas. Other suggested ending years relate to the Counter-Reformation or the Peace of Westphalia. Luther began by criticising the sale of indulgences , insisting that the Pope had no authority over purgatory and that the Treasury of Merit had no foundation in the Bible. The Reformation developed further to include a distinction between Law and Gospel , a complete reliance on Scripture as the only source of proper doctrine sola scriptura and the belief that faith in Jesus is the only way to receive God's pardon for sin sola fide rather than good works. Although this is generally considered a Protestant belief, a similar formulation was taught by Molinist and Jansenist Catholics.

Esteem of celibacy had limited the influence of social natalism in Christianity since its beginning. Charles Provan in the first chapter of his book The Bible and Birth Control deploys fourteen quotations from Luther, many of them half a page long So two very different natalists Carlson is a professional historian, Provan a popular writer both look to the Reformer for inspiration.
