The British Isles became inhabited more than , years ago, as the discovery of stone tools and footprints at Happisburgh in Norfolk has indicated. In the Iron Age , all of Britain south of the Firth of Forth , was inhabited by the Celtic people known as the Britons , including some Belgic tribes e. In 43 AD the Roman conquest of Britain began; the Romans maintained control of their province of Britannia until the early 5th century. The end of Roman rule in Britain facilitated the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain , which historians often regard as the origin of England and of the English people. The Anglo-Saxons , a collection of various Germanic peoples , established several kingdoms that became the primary powers in present-day England and parts of southern Scotland. England in the High Middle Ages includes the history of England between the Norman Conquest in and the death of King John , considered by some to be the last of the Angevin kings of England , in A disputed succession and victory at the Battle of Hastings led to the conquest of England by William of Normandy in This linked the crown of England with possessions in France and brought a new aristocracy to the country that dominated landholding, government and the church. They brought with them the French language and maintained their rule through a system of castles and the introduction of a feudal system of landholding. By the time of William's death in , England formed the largest part of an Anglo-Norman empire, ruled by nobles with landholdings across England, Normandy and Wales. William's sons disputed succession to his lands, with William II emerging as ruler of England and much of Normandy.

Norman Conquest , the military conquest of England by William , duke of Normandy , primarily effected by his decisive victory at the Battle of Hastings October 14, and resulting ultimately in profound political, administrative, and social changes in the British Isles. The conquest was the final act of a complicated drama that had begun years earlier, in the reign of Edward the Confessor, last king of the Anglo-Saxon royal line. Edward, who had almost certainly designated William as his successor in , was involved in a childless marriage and used his lack of an heir as a diplomatic tool, promising the throne to different parties throughout his reign, including Harold Godwineson, later Harold II , the powerful earl of Wessex.
