Having used this book in my own lecture course on the Holocaust, I have found Niewyk's anthology very helpful in orienting students to the vast literature and complex of issues surrounding the "mass murder of Europe's Jews. The volume is very well organized and lends itself to the learning environment. After a brief introductory overview of the Nazi slaughter of the European Jews, Niewyk divides the text into five sections with each section containing four essays covering a selected topic. In order to orient the reader to the major ideas and the contrasting views, Niewyk introduces each section with a concise precis of each of the essays in that section. Part I examines the origins and roles of Hitler and the Nazi hierarchy in setting the policies and mechanics of murder in motion. The contrasting views of historians like Gerald Fleming and Hans Mommsen polarize around whether there was some kind of "intentionalist" Hitlerian master plan or if the anti-Jewish policies were, instead, a series of decentralized, "functionally" related anti-Jewish measures which just happened to culminate in genocide. Part II presents conflicting views on the behavior of the Jews during the Holocaust itself, focusing closely on memoirs and evaluations of survivors' accounts of concentration camp experiences.

More than half a century after Auschwitz a group of largely young academics, all experts in the fields of their scholarship, render a critical and comprehensive account on the Historiography of the Holocaust. The monumental study is a must for everyone engaged in Holocaust research, teaching and education. It sets the tone for future debate both at public and academic level. Eminent specialists are well represented here, as are the newer insights of a younger generation of scholars.

Learn About the Holocaust
The Holocaust —the murder of about six million Jews by Nazi Germany from to —is the most well-documented genocide in history. Although there is no single document which lists all Jewish victims of Nazi persecution, there is conclusive evidence that about six million were killed. Evidence for the Holocaust comes in four main varieties: . The perpetrators attempted to avoid creating explicit evidence and tried to destroy the documentary and material evidence of their crimes before the German defeat. Collectively, the evidence refutes the arguments of Holocaust deniers that the Holocaust did not occur as described in historical scholarship. However, other evidence makes clear that Hitler knew about and ordered the genocide. Statements from Adolf Eichmann , Joseph Goebbels , and Heinrich Himmler also indicate that Hitler orchestrated the Holocaust and statements from Hitler himself reveal his genocidal intentions toward Jewry.
