This volume gathers all available evidence for the martyrdoms of Perpetua and Felicitas, two Christian women who became, in the centuries after their deaths in CE, revered throughout the Roman world. Whereas they are now known primarily through a popular third-century account, numerous lesser known texts attest to the profound place they held in the lives of Christians in late antiquity. This book brings together narratives in their original languages with accompanying English translations, including many related entries from calendars, martyrologies, sacramentaries, and chronicles, as well as artistic representations and inscriptions. As a whole, the collection offers readers a robust view of the veneration of Perpetua and Felicitas over the course of six centuries, examining the diverse ways that a third-century Latin tradition was appreciated, appropriated, and transformed as it circulated throughout the late antique world. Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicity

The Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas gives an account of the martyrdom of three catechumens Saturus, Saturninus and Revocatus, and two young women, Vibia Perpetua, 22 years of age, 'well born, liberally educated, honorably married, having father and mother and two brothers, one like herself a catechumen, and an infant son at the breast', and her slave Felicitas, who was pregant at the time of her arrest and gave birth to a girl shortly before her death in the arena. They suffered martyrdom on March 7, , at Carthage. The account is one of the most beautiful pieces of ancient Christian literature. It is unique as far as its authorship is concerned. The largest part of the account ch. Chapters 11 and 13 were written by Saturus.

I was not working on martyrdom in the early Church at the time, but rather I was reading fifth- and sixth-century Latin texts of saints' lives which had incorporated.

Medieval Sourcebook: St. Vibia Perpetua, was executed in the arena in Carthage on 7 March The account of her martyrdom - technically a Passion -is apparently historical and has special interest as much of it was written [section ], in Latin by Perpetua herself before her death. This makes it one of the earliest pieces of writing by a Christian woman.

One of the most widely read and studied texts composed in Late Antiquity is the prison diary of Vibia Perpetua, a young woman of the elite classes who was martyred in March of the year or C. She was well-married and had recently become the mother of a baby son, but despite her advantages, she refused to recant her faith when she was arrested with other recent converts to Christianity. Imprisoned with her was her pregnant slave Felicity.

Bremmer and Marco Formisano, eds. Vibia Perpetua, a young Roman matron, was martyred in Carthage on March 7, , with a group of her fellow Christians. Although it has been the subject of much debate, the account of their time in prison and their execution in the arena, later known as the Passio sanctarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis , is now usually accepted as having been put together in Latin shortly after these events by an editor, or possibly editors, from two earlier documents, the prison diaries of Perpetua and her religious instructor Saturus, to which an introduction and a graphic description of the deaths have been added. Oxford University Press gives us from Thomas Heffernan a new edition, a felicitous translation, and a very detailed commentary on historical, prosopographical, theological, and philosophical issues, and from Jan Bremmer and Marco Formisano a volume of nineteen essays on the Passio , written by an extremely varied group of scholars, some experts on Latin literature, some approaching the text from other areas and for the first time.

The young catechumens, Revocatus and his fellow−servant Felicitas, Saturninus and Secundulus, were apprehended. And among them also was Vivia Perpetua.
