The second law of thermodynamics is one of the enigmatic laws of physics. Sadi Carnot, a French engineer played an important role in its discovery in the 19th century.

According to Sommerfeld, the well known Clausius and Kelvin statements of the second law of thermodynamics comprises two parts. The first part includes the Carnot principle that all Carnot engines operating between the same temperatures have the same efficiency. The second part contains the law of increase in entropy.

Maxwell's demon is a thought experiment created by the physicist James Clerk Maxwell in in which he suggested how the second law of thermodynamics might hypothetically be violated. As individual gas molecules approach the door, the demon quickly opens and shuts the door so that only fast molecules are passed into one of the chambers, while only slow molecules are passed into the other. Because faster molecules are hotter, the demon's behaviour causes one chamber to warm up and the other to cool down, thereby decreasing entropy and violating the second law of thermodynamics. This thought experiment has provoked debate and theoretical work on the relation between thermodynamics and information theory extending to the present day, with a number of scientists arguing that theoretical considerations rule out any practical device violating the second law in this way. The thought experiment first appeared in a letter Maxwell wrote to Peter Guthrie Tait on 11 December
Samuel J. Summary 4. An irreversible process is one in which the system and its environment cannot return together to exactly the states that they were in. The irreversibility of any natural process results from the second law of thermodynamics. The Kelvin statement and Clausius statement of the second law of thermodynamics are equivalent.

Metrics details. The principle of "a calorie is a calorie," that weight change in hypocaloric diets is independent of macronutrient composition, is widely held in the popular and technical literature, and is frequently justified by appeal to the laws of thermodynamics. We review here some aspects of thermodynamics that bear on weight loss and the effect of macronutrient composition. The focus is the so-called metabolic advantage in low-carbohydrate diets — greater weight loss compared to isocaloric diets of different composition.
Kieu a. Corresponding author: a kieu swin. We introduce a class of quantum heat engines which consists of two-energy-eigenstate systems, the simplest of quantum mechanical systems, undergoing quantum adiabatic processes and energy exchanges with heat baths, respectively, at different stages of a cycle. Armed with this class of heat engines and some interpretation of heat transferred and work performed at the quantum level, we are able to clarify some important aspects of the second law of thermodynamics.
The second law of thermodynamics deals with the direction taken by spontaneous processes. Many processes occur spontaneously in one direction only—that is, they are irreversible, under a given set of conditions. Although irreversibility is seen in day-to-day life—a broken glass does not resume its original state, for instance—complete irreversibility is a statistical statement that cannot be seen during the lifetime of the universe.
