This paper addresses the continued association of Richard Hofstadter with consensus history. More specifically, it challenges the view that the origins of this conservative trend in American history can be located within The American Political Tradition.
Look Inside. Apr 24, Minutes Buy. Beard are examples—Hofstadter was able to articulate, in a single work, a historical vision that inspired and shaped an entire generation. Richard Hofstadter — was one of the leading American historians and intellectuals of the twentieth century.
Richard Hofstadter's Tradition
Hofstadter's introduction argues that the major political traditions in the United States, despite contentious battles, have all "shared a belief in the rights of property, the philosophy of economic individualism , the value of competition Rather than focusing on political conflict, Hofstadter proposes that a common ideology of "self-help, free enterprise, competition, and beneficent cupidity" has guided the United States since its inception. Through analyses of the ruling class in the US, Hofstadter argues that this consensus is the hallmark of political life in the US. Part of Hofstadter's argument is to undermine the democratic credentials of politicians mythologized by historians, calling for reflection rather than nostalgia. Thomas Jefferson is presented as an ambiguous figure, an agrarian radical whose " laissez-faire became the political economy of the most conservative thinkers in the country". Andrew Jackson's democracy is also characterized as "a phase in the expansion of liberated capitalism", and Progressive trustbuster Theodore Roosevelt , though he "despised the rich", is described by Hofstadter as a conservative frightened by "any sign of organized power among the people".
The American Political Tradition
It was written by one of the most important American historians in the twentieth century, Richard Hofstadter. It has twelve chapters, each of which focuses on a single great man, or, less frequently, a small group of minor characters. It is the purpose of the book to focus on character portraits, to illustrate the history, ideas, temperament and principles of the 'great figures' of American political history and the way in which their actions and thought affected the United States history. The book is divided into twelve chapters. The first chapter covers the Founding Fathers and the second focuses specifically on Thomas Jefferson. Chapter five discusses Abraham Lincoln and chapter six a prominent abolitionist named Wendell Phillips. Chapter seven centers on the late nineteenth century, particularly on the political figures during the so-called Gilded Age.

The American Political Tradition: And the Men Who Made it
Hofstadter characterizes American culture in the late nineteenth century as rough, individualistic and obsessed with material gain. The cultural elites had no place to go - they couldn't compete with self-made entrepreneurs and politics was considered a corrupt career path. Theodore Roosevelt entered politics to restore virtue to political office, the martial virtues in particular. Roosevelt was disgusted by commercial spirit and wanted to imbue the United States' people with a 'fighting edge'.
