It is beautifully and clearly written, and explains all aspects, old and very new, of biomedical engineering in ways that are both exciting to the reader as well as easy to understand. As usual, Professor Saltzman has provided rich context and broad examples; he does an excellent job of weaving in valuable scenarios that are realistic, yet interesting - a great tool for engaging students. There are many creative and useful features to the text: the figures and illustrations provide much value to understanding the material, the problem sets offer both conceptual and quantitative review of the material, and the 'Key Concepts and Definitions' and 'Useful Links' sections at the end of each chapter are very practical for a student new to the field of BME. Of particular note, the 'Profiles in BME' vignettes for each chapter add a personal touch and serve to connect students to role models who are real people with real stories making an impact on the world. Mark Saltzman. Professor Saltzman's research has been formative in the fields of controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering. As a trainee in the laboratory of Professor Robert Langer at MIT, Professor Saltzman participated in some of the very earliest work in utilizing polymer scaffolds for cell transplantation with Dr Joseph Vacanti. In particular, his work applied engineering principles to understand cell mobility and migration within implantable matrices, 2 , 3 , 4 establishing a basis for quantitative design of engineered tissues. Another major focus has been the integration of drug delivery into tissue engineering and cell transplantation approaches. Professor Saltzman addresses the audience at a dinner celebration in as part of a research symposium on the occasion of his birthday. Professor Saltzman is recognized as a pioneer in quantifying and modeling the transport of macromolecules through synthetic polymers and biological matrices, 11 , 12 having applied this work in particular to female reproductive health applications 13 , 14 and to the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and brain cancer.
