Thales, Empedocles, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Democritus etc. Most of the knowledge available about Socrates is through the works of Plato — his disciple. Instead of claiming to know anything, Socrates disguised as an Ignorant that he did not think he knew answers to all the questions.
Socrates seldom came with the final answer himself but rather stimulated excitement in the people to take interest in the questions raised by him and made people appreciate the difficulties in the attempts to find the solution. Is it Persuasive? In The Republic , Plato argues that kings should become philosophers or that philosophers should become kings, or philosopher kings, as they possess a special level of knowledge, which is required to rule the Republic successfully. To deal with the problem of justice, Plato considers the ideal polis, a collective unit of self-government, and the relationship between the structure of the Republic and the attainment of justice. Plato argues that philosopher kings should be the rulers, as all philosophers aim to discover the ideal polis. Although theoretically it would be ideal if the Republic and the modern state were ruled by knowledge, and not power, power is crucial in the make-up of political activity. At the same time, it is inevitable to pick out some features of the modern state congruent to those of the ideal polis. Nowadays, most modern states are democratic, in the sense that people have a say in the running of the state.
Questions about moral character have recently come to occupy a central place in philosophical discussion. Part of the explanation for this development can be traced to the publication in of G. To do ethics properly, Anscombe argued, one must start with what it is for a human being to flourish or live well. That meant returning to some questions that mattered deeply to the ancient Greek moralists. Answers to these ancient questions emerge today in various areas of philosophy, including ethics especially virtue ethics , feminist ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of education, and philosophy of literature. Especially in Part III of A Theory of Justice , Rawls provided a picture of how individuals might be brought up in a just state to develop the virtues expected of good citizens.
Abundant of ancient Greek moral theories are concerned with the good life for human beings, or, in a word, happiness. Ethical thinking is vital part of human history. It can be religious or theoretical or geared toward practical application.
While moral theory does not invent morality, or even reflection on it, it does try to bring systematic thinking to bear on these activities. Ancient moral theory, however, does not attempt to be a comprehensive account of all the phenomena that fall under the heading of morality. Rather, assuming piecemeal opinions and practices, it tries to capture its underlying essence. It is the nature of such an enterprise to evaluate and criticize some of these opinions and practices but that is not its primary goal. Ancient moral theory tries to provide a reflective account of an essential human activity so one can grasp what is of fundamental importance in pursuing it.
