Problems and Solutions in Structural Geology and Tectonics
George W. Leney; A new nomogram for the solution of problems in structural and economic geology. Economic Geology ;; 58 8 : — A new nomogram has been devised with which, by the use of simple procedures, a wide variety of problems in structural and economic geology may be solved, including the apparent inclination of an inclined drill hole projected normally onto a vertical plane, the apparent inclination of a drill hole projected normally onto a dipping plane, the apparent dip of an inclined plane at its intersection with a vertical section, the apparent dip of the intersection on either of 2 intersecting planes, and the standard problems of determining the thickness of, and depth to an inclined strata. All of the above mentioned problems can be solved by performing these 2 operations and combinations of them, and the necessary techniques have been worked out. While the diagram was devised largely for the use of geologists, it could be used in other fields where the same problems in descriptive geometry are encountered.
By Elsevier Science. Problems and Solutions in Structural Geology and Tectonics, Volume 5, in the series Developments in Structural Geology and Tectonics, presents students, researchers and practitioners with an all-new set of problems and solutions that structural geologists and tectonics researchers commonly face. Topics covered include ductile deformation such as strain analyses , brittle deformation such as rock fracturing , brittle-ductile deformation, collisional and shortening tectonics, thrust-related exercises, rift and extensional tectonics, strike slip tectonics, and cross-section balancing exercises. The book provides a how-to guide for students of structural geology and geologists working in the oil, gas and mining industries. Cross-sections are used by geologists to represent the structure of the Earth's subsurface. To construct a cross-section, observations from the Earth's surface and other available information are projected onto an underground vertical plane to interpret how data relate to each other. The main challenge is transforming the scattered data into a reasonable geological geometry.
This activity has received positive reviews in a peer review process involving five review categories. The five categories included in the process are. This activity has benefited from input from faculty educators beyond the author through a review and suggestion process as a part of an activity development workshop. Workshop participants were asked to peruse activities submitted by others in their disciplinary group prior to the workshop. The groups then convened early in the workshop to discuss the materials and make suggestions for improvements. Students are introduced to the use of linear algebra in an intuitive and accessible way, through classroom activity and homework set. The familiar three-point problem is cast in terms of three dimensional analytic geometry, fostering understanding of mathematical models for simple geometric forms.
Writing papers with an emphasis on structural geology and tectonics: advices and warnings. E-mail: haakon. The objective of this short paper was to provide some advice on how to write a geoscience paper of international standard and to warn against some common pitfalls. It is focused on how to structure a paper and stresses the importance of building its contents around a well-defined problem. Furthermore, the importance of moving away from outdated and counterproductive ways of describing and interpreting deformation is emphasized.
Bilgin, N. Recently it is predicted that around 35 Billion Euros will be spent on tunneling projects in Turkey in few years' time and it is believed that in most cases mechanical excavation will be a key factor in accomplishing tunneling projects in a predetermined time. However, the geology is very complex in Turkey causing several problems during excavation and delaying the projects. Several examples will be given from the current mechanized tunneling projects having difficult ground conditions. It will be explained how the problems were solved taking into considerations some fundamental concepts of rock engineering.
Structural geology is the study of the three-dimensional distribution of rock units with respect to their deformational histories. The primary goal of structural geology is to use measurements of present-day rock geometries to uncover information about the history of deformation strain in the rocks, and ultimately, to understand the stress field that resulted in the observed strain and geometries.

Walter Stanley White; A cotangent ruler for simplifying the graphic solution of problems in structural geology. Economic Geology ;; 41 5 : — The cotangent ruler is a device for measuring directly the dip of contoured surfaces, or, conversely, for constructing contours that represent planes of known dip. It greatly simplifies the graphic solution of problems in structural geology, and has several specialized applications to problems commonly encountered in mining geology and areal geologic mapping.
