Ultimate cause

Strong reciprocity SR has recently been subject to heated debate. The West camp criticizes advocates of SR for conflating proximate and ultimate causation. SR is said to be a proximate mechanism that is put forward by its advocates as an ultimate explanation of human cooperation. The paper argues that both the West camp and the Laland camp misrepresent what advocates of SR are up to. The West camp is right that SR is a proximate cause of human cooperation. But rather than putting forward SR as an ultimate explanation, as the West camp argues, advocates of SR believe that SR itself is in need of ultimate explanation. Advocates of SR tend to take gene-culture co-evolutionary theory as the correct meta-theoretical framework for advancing ultimate explanations of SR.

Behavior is the change in activity of an organism in response to a stimulus. Behavioral biology is the study of the biological and evolutionary bases for such changes. The idea that behaviors evolved as a result of the pressures of natural selection is not new. Animal behavior has been studied for decades, by biologists in the science of ethology , by psychologists in the science of comparative psychology, and by scientists of many disciplines in the study of neurobiology. Although there is overlap between these disciplines, scientists in these behavioral fields take different approaches.

The Greater sage grouse Centrocercus urophasianus from North America displaying on its lek. The lasting contribution of the paper is that in it Tinbergen formulated four different, albeit somewhat interlinked, approaches to the study of animal behaviour, or four different types of questions we can ask about an observed behaviour. The four types of questions operate at two different levels. Questions 1 and 2 give ultimate or evolutionary explanations. These are answers that take a longer perspective and try to explain why the behaviour has evolved. On the other hand, questions 3 and 4 give proximate explanations.

Fifty years ago, Ernst Mayr published a hugely influential paper on the nature of causation in biology, in which he distinguished between proximate and ultimate causes. Perhaps, some of the attraction to evolutionary biologists has been the invidious comparison between ultimate and proximate. What does proximate and ultimate causation mean? The idea that behaviors evolved as a result of the pressures of natural selection is not new. Proximate results must lead eventually to ultimate results.

A proximate cause is an event which is closest to, or immediately responsible for causing , some observed result. This exists in contrast to a higher-level ultimate cause or distal cause which is usually thought of as the "real" reason something occurred. In most situations, an ultimate cause may itself be a proximate cause for a further ultimate cause. Hence we can continue the above example as follows:. Although the behavior in these two examples is the same, the explanations are based on different sets of factors incorporating evolutionary versus physiological factors.

Causes, proximate and ultimate

Within evolutionary biology a distinction is frequently made between proximate and ultimate causes. One apparently plausible interpretation of this dichotomy is that proximate causes concern processes occurring during the life of an organism while ultimate causes refer to those processes particularly natural selection that shaped its genome. Rather, explanations referring to ultimate causes typically emerge from functional analyses. But these functional analyses do not identify causes of any kind, much less ultimate ones.

Behavioral Biology: Proximate and Ultimate Causes of Behavior

Proximate causes include hereditary, developmental, structural, cognitive, psychological, and physiological aspects of behaviour. In other words, proximate causes are the mechanisms directly underlying the behaviour. For example, an animal separated from the…. In contrast, the ultimate causes of social behaviours include their evolutionary or historical origins and the selective processes that have shaped their past and current functions. In the case of the isolated herd animal, the development of a better defense against predators that results in increased survival of…. If experiments to test these predictions indicate that the predictions are not met, then the hypothesis is falsified and discarded.
