Believe it or not, flooding is the deadliest type of severe weather. Use the buttons below to jump to the flood facts you care about the most, or read the entire Flooding guide to become an expert!

Floods impact on both individuals and communities, and have social, economic, and environmental consequences.

A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are an area of study of the discipline hydrology and are of significant concern in agriculture , civil engineering and public health. Human changes to the environment often increase the intensity and frequency of flooding, for example land use changes such as deforestation and removal of wetlands , changes in waterway course such as with levees , and larger environmental issues such as climate change and sea level rise.

Health impacts of floods

Flash floods are among the most severe natural hazards that cause disastrous environmental and human impacts. The city of Gabes Southern Tunisia is prone to harmful flooding, because of its location on a low plane and its extremely erratic rainfall distribution. Flood risk associated with this is expected to increase further in the coming years due to the high rate of urbanization and an ever growing population. A particular interest is given to a major flooding event, which is the single event that hit the region in the summer season over the last century. Statistical tools, satellite images treatment and analysis, meteorological observation data, Geographic Information System GIS , and survey data were considered in order to understand and explore the different causes of this disaster, its extent and its consequences. ERA5 is a new global reanalysis tool which was used in this study to evaluate spatial and temporal extent of the examined major rainfall event. A survey was also conducted with participants from different areas of the city.

Floods can happen almost anywhere. They can cover an area with just a few inches of water or they can bring enough water to cover the roof of a house. Floods can be dangerous for communities, lasting days, weeks or sometimes even longer.

What are the consequences of floods?

Introduction: Floods are the most common hazard to cause disasters and have led to extensive morbidity and mortality throughout the world. The impact of floods on the human community is related directly to the location and topography of the area, as well as human demographics and characteristics of the built environment. Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the health impacts of disasters and the underlying causes of health impacts associated with floods. A conceptual framework is developed that may assist with the development of a rational and comprehensive approach to prevention, mitigation, and management. The findings then were distilled into common themes.

Other methods include levees, dikes, dams, retention or detention basins. Communities preferred improvement of drainage structures with detention basins near the sites. Floods are caused by many factors: heavy precipitation, severe winds over water, unusual high tides, tsunamis, or failure of dams, levels, retention ponds, or other structures that contained the water. During times of rain or snow, some of the water is retained in ponds or soil, some is absorbed by grass and vegetation, some evaporates, and the rest travels over the land as surface runoff. Floods occur when ponds, lakes, riverbeds, soil, and vegetation cannot absorb all the water.

Causes, impacts and coping strategies of floods in Ghana: a systematic review

Urban flooding has become a major problem in many parts of the world due to its social, economic and environmental impact. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, combined with individual co-author in-depth experience in research and practice in Ghana, we searched academic database such as SCOPUS, Web of Science, Springer, Taylor and Francis, Science Direct and Google scholar for recent studies. One of the most threatening disasters confronting the world is flooding. It has destroyed developmental infrastructure and increased human casualties around the globe [ 1 ]. For example, 5 million people were displaced during the period — globally due to temperature and heavy rainfall.

Causes and impacts of flash floods: case of Gabes City, Southern Tunisia

In an illustrative way it explains the different types of flooding and what dangers and negative impacts floods can cause on human beings and the environment.
