This study investigates bone maintenance and loss within a life course perspective in the Imperial Roman population of Velia. The use of biocultural factors, such as diet, reproductive history and physical activity are emphasized in the interpretive process.
Bone Development and Growth
Bone growth and development are products of the complex interactions of genetic and environmental factors. Longitudinal bone growth depends on the growth plate. The growth plate has 5 different zones—each with a different functional role—and is the final target organ for longitudinal growth. Bone length is affected by several systemic, local, and mechanical factors. All these regulation systems control the final length of bones in a complicated way. Despite its significance to bone stability, bone growth in width has not been studied as extensively as longitudinal bone growth.
Bone Development & Growth
Growth is a complex biological process, product of the interaction between multiple endogenous factors genetic, hormonal, metabolic, receptivity of target tissues and exogenous factors nutrition, physical activity and psychosocial influences , through which living creatures, at the same time as increasing their size, they physiologically mature and progressively acquire a complete functional capacity. The growth process, although it does not occur in a uniform manner, takes place according to an organism's nutrition. In Romania the cases of anthropological forensic exams performed in order to estimate the age of minors include mostly people with an extremely low socio-economic status, frequently homeless people that did not have a certified copy of the medical birth certificate issued or who don't have a birth certificate, most often caused by the fact that the parents did not go to the City Hall to obtain it. We report a case of estimating the age in two twins separated at birth and discuss the consequences of environment factors in altering the anthropological markers for age estimation in the living. One child had a Birth Certificate, was cared for by the maternal assistant, had proper alimentation, and received all needed medical care.

Mechanisms of bone development and repair
The process of bone formation is called osteogenesis or ossification. After progenitor cells form osteoblastic lines, they proceed with three stages of development of cell differentiation, called proliferation, maturation of matrix, and mineralization. Based on its embryological origin, there are two types of ossification, called intramembranous ossification that occurs in mesenchymal cells that differentiate into osteoblast in the ossification center directly without prior cartilage formation and endochondral ossification in which bone tissue mineralization is formed through cartilage formation first.
Berg, R. The major tissues of the bovine carcass—muscle, fat and bone—show differential growth during development.
