Jane Austen at the Edge of Romanticism and Victorian Era in Pride and Prejudice
Because her stories generally present a series of married or courting character couples, they lend themselves well to analysis as a set of different but related representations of marriage. This dissertation uses the semiotic categories of Charles S. Peirce to analyze the representations of marriage in two of Austen's novels: Lady Susan, as an example of her early, experimental work; and Pride and Prejudice, as an example of her mature work. It tracks the increasing balance in her usage of the various representational modes outlined by Peirce in his semiotic categories, treating the various character couples in the stories as different signifier types, such as the Iconic, Indexical, and Symbolic types, as well as the predicted subtypes formed from mixing these three primary sign types. The analysis yields new insights that are relevant to ongoing critical discussions of the tensions between the natural and the codified aspects of marriage, between the free and the constrained elements of the relationship, and between the ideal union and the pragmatic one. Jane Austen´s Representation of Marriage in "Pride and Prejudice"
A woman in those times and her position in life was defined by the father or husband. Women were expected to behave modest, submissive, and, most important: incapable of independent thought. The protagonists of Pride and Prejudice are the exact opposite of this image, and are thus interesting to follow through their marriage adventures. This thesis also deals with the sources of happiness and contentment women were able to exploit in the Victorian Age, primarily through marriage and family. Jana Gohrisch understands the construction of happiness as a process of emotional self- fashioning which aims at making the middle-class individual emotionally fit for both success and failure under the conditions of laissez- faire capitalism. Abstract: The following research proposal will discuss how I plan to write my thesis on the novels of Jane Austen. As the title suggests, I will be focusing on marriage and societies expectations throughout the eighteenth century in Britain, which is a reoccurring theme in Austens seven novels. I want to know what kind of world Austen grew up in, and how it influenced the way she wrote. A social influence on marriage and order and class systems is a prevalent issue in the novels, and one I want to investigate further. Having researched primary and secondary literature to a great degree to aid me in this study, I am of the opinion that I have gathered enough information to base my thesis on.
Pride and Prejudice
In my thesis I focus on a well-known novelist Jane Austen and her classification in periods. The aim of this thesis is to prove, to what extent should she be considered as a writer of romanticism or, despite of the time anticoincidence, Victorian era. By virtue of following particular elements in her novel Pride and Prejudice, serving me as a support for my research, and classifying the period, I also establish the aspects of her uniqueness. This thesis is a view both on the society and literature of the two periods watching the social changes and mapping the influence of period and life of the author on her literary production.

Pride and Prejudice contains one of the most cherished love stories in English literature: the courtship between Darcy and Elizabeth. Of course, one could also say that Elizabeth is guilty of prejudice and Darcy of pride—the title cuts both ways. In each case, anxieties about social connections, or the desire for better social connections, interfere with the workings of love. Austen does sound some more realist or, one could say, cynical notes about love, using the character of Charlotte Lucas, who marries the buffoon Mr. Collins for his money, to demonstrate that the heart does not always dictate marriage. Yet with her central characters, Austen suggests that true love is a force separate from society and one that can conquer even the most difficult of circumstances.
Abstract This dissertation explores what life was like for free black families and the nascent black communities they formed in antebellum Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, New York, Skilled black pioneer settlers found work in their trades, black entrepreneurs welcomed white patrons in their shops, and unskilled laborers readily found employment. The economic prosperity in the region provided many black families with the means to own real estate, to attain middling class status, and for black men to earn the rights to suffrage in the state. The great socioeconomic changes that occurred in the region also precipitated an explosion of evangelical religiosity that was especially intense in, but not exclusive to, Rochester. Sadly, labor opportunities for black workers in Rochester shifted between and the s, when they were pushed out of skilled and entrepreneurial occupations.
Literary works offer a sense of pleasure as well as human values. They teach people to love their own culture and to respect cultures different from their own. Literature varies in form. They may be in the form of fiction, play and essay or verse. In this thesis, the writer takes a form of fiction known as novel to be analyzed. This thesis aims to reveal which characters represent pride and prejudice. Hopefully, this thesis will help others in understanding this novel in particular and other literary works in general.
