Research suggests this comorbidity likely arises as a result of the influence of non-disorder specific mechanisms Lee, in preparation; Slade et al. Aim Two is to determine whether these personality and cognitive influences are equally as explanatory for comorbid AUDs and Depressive Disorders in men and women.
This study stands to add to the literature regarding why some people experience problems with both depression and alcohol and may suggest potential influences that could be addressed in treatment. Previous empirical studies have indicated beliefs and attitudes about alcohol consumption are largely predictive of drinking behaviors Barnett et al.
Despite the large body of literature on the influence of alcohol-related attitudes and personality variables on drinking decisions, less is known about the influence of mood on drinking decisions. As such, the purpose of the current study is to examine the potential influence of positive and negative mood states on the types of decisions individuals make about consuming alcohol.
Specifically, we are interested in examining whether current mood adds incrementally to the prediction of alcohol-related decisions beyond personality traits, attitudes about alcohol, and previous alcohol or substance usage among college students. This study stands to add to the literature regarding how people make decisions to consume alcohol and may suggest potential influences that could be addressed in prevention or treatment interventions.
Extensive research has explored methods of detecting feigned ADHD, but has yet to provide strong evidence of the effectiveness of any particular method Marshall et al. However, Harp et al. Results of this study stand to add to our ability to detect genuine vs. Adolescents receiving residentially-based treatment are particularly vulnerable to experiencing continued difficulties due to the complexity of their needs Connor et al.
However, no previous studies have examined these possibilities. As such, using a naturalistic, longitudinal design implemented at a local residential treatment facility, I aim to determine whether adolescents who undergo a standardized comprehensive psychological assessment differ across time from those receiving a standard initial assessment on 1 engagement and 2 outcomes including symptom severity, treatment-interfering behaviors, and adaptive functioning.
Practically, results from this work could inform intervention planning and increase intervention and cost effectiveness for adolescents in residential treatment.
Study results may also contribute to on-going dialogs about best practices in residential treatment Dale et al. Youth in residential treatment experience a wide variety of problems and accurate assessment of their difficulties is necessary to inform treatment. Providers often gather information about a youth with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory — Adolescent MMPI-A but its use is limited by problems with length and discriminant validity. This inefficacy suggests that current models of risky drinking are missing an important factor s.
The current models include environmental factors, drinking motives, and two personality traits i. While this evidence suggests a relationship, no previous studies have directly examined the role of demoralization in predicting risky drinking in a model that also accounted for the predictive factors described above.
Thus, in a sample of college drinkers, this study will examine if demoralization explains additional variance in risky drinking not captured by environmental factors, drinking motives, and the two personality traits of disconstraint and negative affectivity. As a term, it is used to describe compulsions in a range of psychological disorders, including obsessive-compulsive, body dysmorphic, hair pulling, and skin picking related difficulties.
The construct of compulsivity is also important to understanding processes that are common across these disorders i. However, there is currently no commonly used definition of compulsivity that is descriptive and discriminative while still encompassing disorder specific, transdiagnostic, and dimensional or trait like manifestations.
However, this framework for defining compulsivity has not been empirically investigated. The current study proposes to use exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the empirical support for this definition of compulsivity. Click here for more information on this study! Healthcare in the United States has increasingly benefited from the adoption of multidisciplinary providers. Many multidisciplinary teams include psychologists who often conduct psychological and personality assessments in their practice. This special section highlights areas of personality and psychological assessment in applied healthcare contexts. Nghiem and colleagues review the psychometric performance of various personality and psychopathology instruments and provide recommendations for the assessment of solid organ transplant evaluations. Gottschling and colleagues present a culturally adapted screener for anxiety-related symptoms in geriatric adults that can easily be administered in various healthcare settings. Perry and colleagues provide a rationale and method for including a brief personality assessment for patients with cancer. Mitchell and colleagues provide evidence for using the MBHS in primary care clinics as an alternative to the Patient Health Questionnaire
Hathaway and J. Hathaway and American neurologist J. The MMPI was designed as an adult measure of psychopathology and personality structure in Many additions and changes to the measure have been made over time to improve interpretability of the original clinical scales. Additionally, there have been changes in the number of items in the measure, and other adjustments which reflect its current use as a tool towards modern psychopathy and personality disorders. Retaining only of the original items, its hierarchical scale structure provides non-redundant information across 51 scales that are easily interpretable.
True longitudinal research using more expansive measurement of personality and psychopathology could adjudicate among different hypotheses.
