Colonialism is a practice or policy of control by one people or power over other people or areas, [1] [2] [3] often by establishing colonies [4] and generally with the aim of economic dominance. The foreign administrators rule the territory in pursuit of their interests, seeking to benefit from the colonised region's people and resources. Colonialism is strongly associated with the European colonial period starting with the 15th century when some European states established colonising empires.

The Palgrave Handbook of Ethnicity pp Cite as. Various legal narratives are currently told about Native Hawaiians in American federal courts. Such narratives often draw on law historically specific to other minority groups including African Americans and Native Americans and often conflict with the realities of Hawaiian law and legal history as well as real-time discrimination and inequities seemingly attracted to Native Hawaiian identity. These include racialized and federal recognition narratives which narrate Native Hawaiians as racists or a type of federally recognized tribe. Contemporary Native Hawaiian narratives sometimes echo those narratives, seemingly reflecting a legal identity crisis. A fourth narrative also iterated by the Native Hawaiian community but sometimes given less attention is a remedial self-determination like that in international law.

Amardeep Singh. Colonialism is the implanting of settlements on a distant territory. Colonialism in its modern form first began to take shape about years ago, and it changed the economic landscape of the world forever. For one thing, it enabled Europe to get fabulously rich on the trade it produced. The foundations of what we now think of as free-market capitalism were invented during the colonial era, partly to handle trade.

The history of Hawaii describes the era of human settlements in the Hawaiian Islands. First settlers to claim Hawaii was sometime between and AD, [1] when the islands were first settled by Polynesians. Hawaiian civilization was isolated from the rest of the world for at least years. Europeans led by British explorer James Cook were among the initial imperialistic groups to arrive in the Hawaiian Islands in The Spanish named these islands "Isla de Mesa, de los Monjes y Desgraciada" , being on the route linking the Philippines with Mexico across the Pacific Ocean, between the ports of Acapulco and Manila, which were both part of New Spain. The kingdom was prosperous and important for its agriculture and strategic location in the Pacific.

Imperialism is a policy or ideology of extending the rule over peoples and other countries, [2] for extending political and economic access, power and control, often through employing hard power , especially military force, but also soft power. While related to the concepts of colonialism and empire , imperialism is a distinct concept that can apply to other forms of expansion and many forms of government. Expansionism and centralisation have existed throughout recorded history by states , with the earliest examples dating back to the mid- third millennium BC. However, the concept of imperialism arose in the modern age, associated chiefly with the European colonial powers of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries and New Imperialism. Following the decolonization of European holdings, the concept has further evolved and has been broadly used to identify as well as criticise a range of policies and a number of states, including even supposedly anti-imperialist states. The word imperialism originated from the Latin word imperium , [3] which means supreme power, " sovereignty ", or simply "rule".

This article focuses on the extent to which imperialism contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. The first part describes the emergence of specific imperialist cultures and attitudes in Europe. The second part deals with economic rivalries, showing that financial imperialism was not identical with formal political expansion.

Anti-imperialism in political science and international relations is a term used in a variety of contexts, usually by nationalist movements who want to secede from a larger polity [ citation needed ] usually in the form of an empire , but also in a multi-ethnic sovereign state or as a specific theory opposed to capitalism in Marxist—Leninist discourse, derived from Vladimir Lenin 's work Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism. A less common usage is by supporters of a non-interventionist foreign policy. People who categorize themselves as anti-imperialists often state that they are opposed to colonialism , colonial empires, hegemony , imperialism and the territorial expansion of a country beyond its established borders.
