The paper goes on to argue that ironism is not only consistent with the liberal society which Rorty favours, but that it can serve such a society by helping to illustrate the ways in which those societies contain unrecognized injustices. Many have objected to the notion of the ironist.

Richard Rorty

R ichard Rorty is in danger of attaining the sort of eminence which today is normally reserved for French philosophes. Nancy Fraser has accused Rorty of failing to acknowledge patriarchal assumptions. I will argue that Rorty is very much a figure for his times, but not quite in the way that some critics have suggested. If Rorty were offering a remodelled version of Cold War ideology, then his importance would be declining. With the collapse of the Soviet empire, us foreign policy no longer needs to be based upon an unrelenting anti-Marxism. Fear of communism gave Cold War politicians, such as Reagan or Bush, a moral certainty.

Richard Rorty — developed a distinctive and controversial brand of pragmatism that expressed itself along two main axes. One is negative—a critical diagnosis of what Rorty takes to be defining projects of modern philosophy. The other is positive—an attempt to show what intellectual culture might look like, once we free ourselves from the governing metaphors of mind and knowledge in which the traditional problems of epistemology and metaphysics and indeed, in Rorty's view, the self-conception of modern philosophy are rooted. In this book, and in the closely related essays collected in Consequences of Pragmatism , hereafter CP , Rorty's principal target is the philosophical idea of knowledge as representation, as a mental mirroring of a mind-external world. Providing a contrasting image of philosophy, Rorty has sought to integrate and apply the milestone achievements of Dewey, Hegel and Darwin in a pragmatist synthesis of historicism and naturalism.

In contrast to his earlier work, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature , Rorty mostly abandons attempts to explain his theories in analytical terms and instead creates an alternate conceptual schema to that of the "Platonists" he rejects. In this schema " truth " as the term is used conventionally is considered unintelligible and meaningless. The book is divided into three parts—"Contingency", "Ironism and Theory" and "Cruelty and Solidarity". Here, Rorty argues that all language is contingent.

Pragmatism and the Soci The Pragmatist Skepsis as a Socia The aim of this paper is to show that there is no such contradiction between these two orientations, provided one keeps in mind that according to Rorty, philosophy is about creating, strengthening and undermining various descriptions of human culture.
