Plant breeding is the science of changing the traits of plants in order to produce desired characteristics. The most frequently addressed traits are those related to biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, grain or biomass yield, end-use quality characteristics such as taste or the concentrations of specific biological molecules proteins, sugars, lipids, vitamins, fibers and ease of processing harvesting, milling, baking, malting, blending, etc. Genes in a plant are what determine what type of qualitative or quantitative traits it will have. Plant breeders strive to create a specific outcome of plants and potentially new plant varieties. It is practiced worldwide by individuals such as gardeners and farmers, and by professional plant breeders employed by organizations such as government institutions, universities, crop-specific industry associations or research centers.

It is mainly a tool for teaching and research. This glossary contains terminology frequently used in clinics and the laboratory. Within all areas of genetics the utilisation of terms in the glossary may also evolve with time or develop specific conations in different areas of study. There is no direct correspondence between the French and English terms defined in these glossaries. Certain terms exist in only one of these languages.

Recessive alleles are expressed in the phenotype when the genotype is homozygous recessive aa. Regulator genes control the timing of production of a variety of chemicals in humans and other organisms. Shortly after conception, regulator genes work as master switches orchestrating the timely development of our body parts. They are also responsible for changes that occur in our bodies as we grow older. Regulator genes are also called homeotic genes.
Glossary of Agricultural Biotechnology Terms
Agricultural Biotechnology : A range of tools, including traditional breeding techniques, that alter living organisms, or parts of organisms, to make or modify products; improve plants or animals; or develop microorganisms for specific agricultural uses. Modern biotechnology today includes the tools of genetic engineering. Allergen : A substance, usually a protein, that can cause an allergy or allergic reaction in the body.
Backcross Breeding : A breeding method used to move one or a few desirable genes from an agronomically poor line to an elite line. This is done by crossing the line having a few desirable genes donor parent line to an elite line recurrent parent line , and crossing offspring with the desired gene s to the recurrent parent. For more information, see the Backcross Breeding article. Backcross Population : A population of individuals derived by making crosses between hybrid progeny and one of the parents.
