It is a simple project using Arduino UNO and a few easily available components to control the speed of rotation of a DC Motor and also it direction of rotation. DC Motors are found everywhere: electronics, toys, fans, tools, discs, pumps etc. DC Motor is an actuator that converts the DC supply to rotation or movement. Different types of motors are used in different applications like Robotics, precision positioning, industrial automation etc. Generally, when a DC motor is associated with any microcontroller based system, it is often connected using a Motor Driver IC. A Motor Driver IC provides the necessary current for the motor to run.

When a DC machine is loaded either as a motor or as a generator, the rotor conductors carry current. These conductors lie in the magnetic field of the air gap. Thus, each conductor experiences a force. The conductors lie near the surface of the rotor at a common radius from its centre. Hence, a torque is produced around the circumference of the rotor, and the rotor starts rotating. When the machine operates as a generator at a constant speed, this torque is equal and opposite to that provided by the prime mover.

Typically, these motors are deployed in equipment that requires some form of rotary or motion-producing control. Direct current motors are essential components in many electrical engineering projects. DC motors fall into different categories, depending on their construction. The most common types include brushed or brushless, permanent magnet, series, and parallel. These brushes are usually kept in close proximity to the commutator. Other useful functions of brushes in dc motors include ensuring sparkless operation, controlling the direction of current during rotation, and keeping the commutator clean. They usually contain one or more permanent magnets that spin around a fixed armature.

The universal motor is a type of electric motor that can operate on either AC or DC power and uses an electromagnet as its stator to create its magnetic field. It is often referred to as an AC series motor. The universal motor is very similar to a DC series motor in construction, but is modified slightly to allow the motor to operate properly on AC power. This type of electric motor can operate well on AC because the current in both the field coils and the armature and the resultant magnetic fields will alternate reverse polarity synchronously with the supply. Hence the resulting mechanical force will occur in a consistent direction of rotation, independent of the direction of applied voltage, but determined by the commutator and polarity of the field coils. Universal motors have high starting torque , can run at high speed, and are lightweight and compact.

A DC motor is any of a class of rotary electrical motors that converts direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy. The most common types rely on the forces produced by magnetic fields. DC motors were the first form of motor widely used, as they could be powered from existing direct-current lighting power distribution systems. A DC motor's speed can be controlled over a wide range, using either a variable supply voltage or by changing the strength of current in its field windings.

When electric current flows through an electrical wire placed between two magnets facing with each other, it generates force. Electric current, magnetic field and motion respectively applies perpendicular directions each other just as when you open the middle finger electric current , the forefinger magnetic field and the thumb force of your left hand respectively to mutually orthogonal axes.
