Hydrogen-enabled microstructure and fatigue strength engineering of titanium alloys

Traditionally, titanium alloys with satisfactory mechanical properties can only be produced via energy-intensive and costly wrought processes, while titanium alloys produced using low-cost powder metallurgy methods consistently result in inferior mechanical properties, especially low fatigue strength. Herein, we demonstrate a new microstructural engineering approach for producing low-cost titanium alloys with exceptional fatigue strength via the hydrogen sintering and phase transformation HSPT process. The high fatigue strength presented in this work is achieved by creating wrought-like microstructures without resorting to wrought processing.

Titanium is widely distributed throughout the whole universe such as stars and interstellar dust. Titanium offers a unique property spectrum owing to the combination of high strength, stiffness, toughness, low density, and good corrosion resistance. These properties are enabled by a wide variety of titanium alloys ranging from applications at very low to elevated temperatures. This spectrum enables weight savings in multiple key aerospace applications and other high-performance applications in the medical, chemcial and car industry. The rate of pitting corrosion was evaluated using cyclic polarization measurements. Chronoamperometry was applied to assess the passive layer growth kinetics and breakdown. Microstructure influence on the uniform corrosion rate of these alloys was also investigated employing dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy DEIS.
