It focuses first on the ambiguous nature of same, in that the same x can be i one entity seen on different occasions, or ii two different entities of the same kind.

I then provide a formal representation of the syntax and semantics of same as a two-place predicate. I show that when either of the two arguments we expect to be obligatory is not overt, it is because same has undergone a derivation to license this null argument—one derivation type in extensional cases of same , and a different derivation in intensional cases. Government and binding theory

Government and binding GB , GBT is a theory of syntax and a phrase structure grammar in the tradition of transformational grammar developed principally by Noam Chomsky in the s. The name refers to two central subtheories of the theory: government , which is an abstract syntactic relation applicable, among other things, to the assignment of case ; and binding , which deals chiefly with the relationships between pronouns and the expressions with which they are co-referential. GB was the first theory to be based on the principles and parameters model of language, which also underlies the later developments of the minimalist program. The main application of the government relation concerns the assignment of case. Government is defined as follows:. This means that for example in a structure like the following, A m-commands B, but B does not m-command A:.

Intervention effects have been thoroughly studied in formal syntax in the domain of weak islands. Can one unify such distinct utilizations of the concept of intervention under a single formal locality principle? This paper explores the possibility of a unitary approach by proposing solutions for observed discrepancies between the effects in adults and children, and more generally between the different utilizations of the concept of intervention in recent work on adult grammar and language acquisition. Relativized Minimality RM is seen as a formal principle penalizing configurations as a function of the distinctness between target and intervener in local relations, where distinctness is precisely expressed as a grammar-based notion. A unitary system consisting of RM and an explicit distinctness hierarchy is argued to be operative in intervention effects in grammar and language acquisition.
