The spread of Coronavirus is causing in the society all around the world a considerable degree of fear, worry and concern and particularly among healthcare workers that are at increased risk for infection. The role of infection control in the design of hospitals is increasing every day. This paper highlights the role of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning minimizing the risk of infection from airborne transmission within the built environment through the application of best practices.
Research related to the naturally ventilated hospital buildings was outside the scope of this review article. After , a total of papers were identified that fit the inclusion criteria of this study. Of these, papers have been included in this review to understand the relationship between the health outcomes of a patient and the indoor environment of a mechanically ventilated hospital building. The purpose of this literature review was to summarize how indoor environmental parameters related to mechanical ventilation systems of a hospital building are impacting patients. Future interdisciplinary collaborative research has been identified and can lead to specific optimum ranges for indoor environmental parameters in different spaces for hospital buildings.
