The United States' dependence on oil has long influenced its foreign policy. This timeline traces the story of U. The three major periods include the rise of oil as a commodity, beginning in ; the post-WWII age of geopolitical competition; and the current era of deregulation and diversification. The development of the Watt steam engine in the late eighteenth century spurs a wave of mechanization in Europe and the United States known as the Industrial Revolution. Coal is the main energy source driving the revolution in its beginning years. In the mids, kerosene produced from refined crude oil begins to make its way onto the market in the United States as a lighting fuel, an alternative to the dwindling supply of whale oil. Crude oil is successfully extracted using a new drilling method in Pennsylvania, which sparks a regional influx of speculative oil drilling.
With continuing instability in Iraq, the threat of a nuclear Iran, and the ever-present reality of further terrorist attacks within its own borders, Saudi Arabia has been forced to make some hard decisions. The current structure of the Saudi security apparatus is only one pathway to improved security. Economic and demographic threats may well be the hardest hurdles to overcome. What has been accomplished since and what are the real prospects and implications of further reform? To what extent should the kingdom continue to rely on the US to protect its interests? Cordesman and Obaid argue that it is time to put an end to client and tutorial relations. Saudi Arabia must emerge as a true partner.

National Security in Saudi Arabia: Threats, Responses, and Challenges
The shifts in Saudi Arabia's power structure that have taken place since King Salman came to power in January have created a new set of Saudi priorities for shaping Saudi Arabia's future. These new priorities have led to participation in a major war in Yemen, efforts to isolate Qatar that have broken up an already weak and divided Gulf Cooperation Council GCC , and deeper tensions with Iran over its military build-up and efforts to expand its regional influence. Most of the earlier changes at top levels of the Saudi government and security structure were motivated by new King's desire to consolidate power at the top of the government and royal family. The more recent changes to the Saudi national security sector and military command made in February are harder to interpret. Mohammed bin Salman may have been reacting to the lack of progress in the war in Yemen, Saudi tensions with Qatar, and MBS's feelings that too much of the Kingdom's security spending has been wasteful, poorly planned, and involved some element of corruption.
Yemen, a small country on the Arabian Peninsula, has become the site of grievous civilian suffering amid an intractable civil war. Many analysts say the fighting, now seven years old, has turned into a proxy war: Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who overthrew the Yemeni government, are pitted against a multinational coalition led by Saudi Arabia. The conflict has displaced more than one million people and given rise to cholera outbreaks, medicine shortages, and threats of famine. Saudi Arabia. Wars and Conflict.
National security or national defence is the security and defence of a nation state , including its citizens , economy , and institutions, which is regarded as a duty of government. Originally conceived as protection against military attack , national security is now widely understood to include also non-military dimensions, including the security from terrorism , minimisation of crime , economic security , energy security , environmental security , food security , cyber-security etc. Similarly, national security risks include, in addition to the actions of other nation states , action by violent non-state actors , by narcotic cartels , and by multinational corporations , and also the effects of natural disasters. Governments rely on a range of measures, including political , economic , and military power, as well as diplomacy , to safeguard the security of a nation-state.
