The Oxford Handbook of Contemporary Phenomenology presents twenty-eight chapters on the field of contemporary phenomenology, and gives an overview of the type of work and range of topics found and discussed in contemporary phenomenology. The chapters aim to articulate and develop original theoretical perspectives.

Neurophenomenology refers to a scientific research program aimed to address the hard problem of consciousness in a pragmatic way.

Powered by WP Bannerize. A Phenomenological Take on Naturalizing the Mind [1]. The problem of how to conceptualize the subjective aspects of human experience has been one of the centrepieces of any philosophical theory of the mind ever since Descartes. Following decades of ignorance in the wake of behaviourism and, simultaneously, the postmodernist farewell to the Cartesian heritage, the problem of subjective consciousness has once more become a focal point of attraction both in comtemporary philosophy of mind and in the cognitive neurosciences. By now, debates about the conceptual boundaries and the empirical possibilities of explaining consciousness within the best available framework of the natural sciences are reaching far beyond the narrow academic frontiers of traditional epistemology. And second, what precisely is the object of naturalization in the project of naturalizing consciousness? To be sure, Husserlian phenomenology was for its own part, not least an explicit critical rejoinder to the naturalism of the time.

Teaching phenomenology to qualitative researchers, cognitive scientists, and phenomenologists. Shaun Gallagher; Denis Francesconi. The authors examine several issues in teaching phenomenology 1 to advanced researchers who are doing qualitative research using phenomenological interview methods in disciplines such as psychology, nursing, or education, and 2 to advanced researchers in the cognitive neurosciences. In these contexts, the term "teaching" needs to be taken in a general and non-didactic way. In the case of the first group, it involves guiding doctoral students in their conception and design of a qualitative methodology that is properly phenomenological. In the case of the second, it is more concerned with explaining the relevance of phenomenology to an audience of experimental scientists via conference presentations or published papers.

I attempt to push this analysis towards a more complete enactivist phenomenology of time-consciousness. Gallagher S. Constructivist Foundations 13 1 : 91— To stay informed about comments to this publication and post comments yourself, please log in first. Volume 16 Number 1.

It must be understood within the framework of his theory of a concrete, embodied dynamics, grounded in his general theory of autonomous systems. Through concepts and paradigms such as biological autonomy, embodiment and neurophenomenology, the article explores the multiple levels of circular causality assumed by Varela to play a fundamental role in the emergence of human experience. The concept of biological autonomy provides the necessary and sufficient conditions for characterizing biological life and identity as an emergent and circular self-producing process. Embodiment provides a systemic and dynamical framework for understanding how a cognitive -a mind- can arise in an organism in the midst of its operational cycles of internal regulation and ongoing sensorimotor coupling. Global subjective properties can emerge at different levels from the interactions of components and can reciprocally constrain local processes through an ongoing, recursive morphodynamics.

Quite a few cognitive scientists are working toward a naturalization of phenomenology. This paper shows that the original Husserlian stance is deeper, clearer and more advanced than most supposed contemporary improvements. The requirements grounding the scientific explanation of subjective experience are discussed, such as the nature of the stimuli, their variables, and their manipulation by properly phenomenological methods.
